Clutch Pack Upgrades

If you are pushing serious power through a C7 S6 or S7, the factory DL501 clutch pack eventually becomes one of the major limitations. The stock 4.0T clutch is stronger than the version used in many 3.0T cars, but additional torque, repeated launches, heat, mileage and aggressive TCU calibration can still lead to slipping, lazy engagement or excessive clutch adaptation values.

An upgraded clutch pack increases friction capacity and, depending on the design, may also improve heat management and clamping capability. That does not mean the clutch with the highest plate count is automatically the best one. Plate thickness, friction material, steel-plate thermal capacity, basket design, TCU calibration and overall drivability matter just as much as the number of discs stuffed inside the basket.

Important: Nearly every upgraded DL501 clutch requires a TCU tune that properly increases clutch pressure and recalibrates engagement. Installing an upgraded pack while continuing to run stock or poorly configured TCU software can still result in slipping, overheating and premature wear.

Major DL501 Clutch Upgrades

Brand and Clutch Published Capacity Details Core and Requirements
JHM DL501 R15 clutch pack JHM R-Series R15 Approximately 850 to 900 lb-ft A 15-friction clutch assembly designed for the C7 S6 and S7 4.0T as well as other DL501 applications. JHM positions the R15 as a high-capacity street and performance clutch that retains near-stock drivability. Currently sold as a complete new clutch assembly with no core exchange. Proper TCU calibration and clutch adaptation are still required.
GPO Parts DL501 clutch friction pack GPO Parts Stage 1: approximately 700 lb-ft
Stage 2: approximately 850 to 900 lb-ft
Stage 3: 1,000+ lb-ft claimed
GPO offers several configurations ranging from a stock rebuild to 13, 15 and 17-friction performance versions. Stage 2 is the normal high-power street option. Stage 3 is intended for large-frame turbo, single-turbo, nitrous or 1,000-plus horsepower builds. Available by sending in a rebuildable clutch or purchasing a new core. The higher stages require TCU software capable of approximately 20 bar or greater clutch pressure. GPO specifically warns that the Stage 3 clutch can move the failure point into the factory gearset.
TVS Engineering DL501 race clutch TVS Engineering Race Clutch 700+ lb-ft A complete plug-and-play racing clutch assembly focused on balancing friction area, steel-plate thickness, thermal capacity and factory-like drivability. TVS specifically argues that simply cramming in more thin plates can reduce reliability and heat capacity. Brand-new assembly and housing with no core return. TVS Stage 4 TCU software is required for the intended calibration, and authorized installation or TVS software may be required for warranty coverage.

SRM offers two upgraded clutch levels for the C7 S6 and S7. Level 1 is the normal street and hybrid-turbo option. Level 2 is intended for much more aggressive combinations where the standard clutch or lower-capacity upgrade will not hold. Refundable core program, with new cores sometimes available. SRM states that upgraded TCU software is required.
